    Abstract

The development of the interdisciplinary field of Sound Art holds its roots in development of Western Concert Music. Beginning with Luigi Russolo and the intonarumori, and owing much to the development and philosophical and musicological ramifications of recorded sound and sound synthesis, this field has split from its origins in Dadaist "concert music" and become a discipline unto itself.

By examining the scientific and musical contributions of electronic musicians throughout the development of electronic and recorded sound, it is therefore possible to trace the parallel development of sound art into contemporary practice, and predict current future possibilities of development, such as neural-net computing. As technology changes and real-time synthesis and audio processing has developed, the field ever-widens, opening new possibilities of artistic collaboration.
