Who am I?
My name is Josh Armenta. I was born in 1989. I’m a Chicano composer and conductor of concern music currently living and working in the Miguel Hidalgo borough of Mexico City.
What do I create?
My goal is to create artistic works with a social impact. Most of my work is for the concert stage, though I have tackled opera a few times and would love to continue to work in the genre.
Where have I lived?
All over! I was born in San Jose, raised in Southern Indiana, did high school in northern Chicagoland, undergraduate work in Washington, DC, graduate school in Baltimore, and now Mexico City.
I’ve also traveled extensively. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Pakistan, Europe, the UK, Canada, and other works.
Much of my formative education was done in the Midwest, so that has a huge influence on my writing as well.
Work with a social impact? What does that mean?
I want to create works that bear witness to important issues of our time.
What are some of the topics I tackled?
Domestic violence, mental health, workers rights, the HIV crisis, queer issues, government abuses, to name a few. If a topic calls to me and I can identify with it, then I’ll write about it. Spirituality of all kinds has a huge influence on my work.
Not all my work is like that, however. I also lean heavily into my Chicano heritage when I’m writing. My goal is to write approachable music that speaks to people.
What do I do outside of music?
I have a day job in software. I like to travel, explore my new city, and spending time with my partner discovering the best tacos and micheladas in Mexico City. I also enjoy cooking, decorating and the gym.
Do you teach privately?
I do! Aside from my ongoing university work, I privately teach electronic music composition and acoustic composition. I’m also available to consult on electronic music programming and design. Send me an email (down below), I can teach in person and online via BlueJeans.
